When your godmother is Dolly Parton, her advice isn’t just golden — it’s gospel. Miley Cyrus has revealed that her new song “More to Lose”, a heartfelt standout from her upcoming album Something Beautiful, was nearly left off the record… until Dolly heard it. With one phone call, the country icon reminded Miley of the power of vulnerability — and gave her the courage to sing it anyway. The result? A love letter from one generation of storytellers to the next.

Miley Cyrus Releases New Single As An Ode To Her “Aunt Dolly”

“This Is My Song For Aunt Dolly,” Says Miley Cyrus

Everyone knows Miley Cyrus‘ dad is country star Billy Ray Cyrus, but what about her godmother?

With the release of her new single, “More to Lose,” Miley Cyrus is opening up about her creative relationship with her famous godmother, whom she affectionately knows as “Aunt Dolly.”

Born in 1992, in Franklin, Tennessee, Miley’s honorary godmother is none other than Dolly Parton.

In a video posted to Instagram with the caption “I will always love you Aunt Dolly,” accompanied by a butterfly emoji, Miley recently spoke about part of her creative process on her upcoming ninth album, Something Beautiful (2025).

Miley Shares Her New Album With Dolly

Noting she went to visit Dolly this past Christmas, she began by stating, “I played her Something Beautiful, and, you know, I was excited because she just came off her rock album.”

Dolly’s album Rockstar (2023) includes a duet of Dolly and her goddaughter singing Cyrus’ 2013 hit “Wrecking Ball,” among many other covers. That same year, Miley released her eighth album, Endless Summer Vacation (2023), which earned her the first two Grammy Awards of her career for the single “Flowers.”

Continuing, Miley said that Dolly’s initial reaction to hearing her unfinished new record was, “Alright, I see what you’re doin’ here. You got any hits?”

Responding, Miley said, “I was pretty sure I didn’t at that time, so I was like, ‘Yeah, I do, it’s called ‘More to Lose,’ but I hadn’t written it yet.”

Upon returning to Los Angeles from her Christmas visit with Dolly, she said she kicked off the new year in the studio on January 2, writing “More to Lose” with their visit in mind.

Of “More to Lose,” Cyrus added, “I’ve always thought of this as my ‘I Will Always Love You,’ so this is my song for Aunt Dolly.”

‘Something Beautiful’ Accompanied By A Film

Miley’s album Something Beautiful will be released on May 30, but that’s only one way to engage with the new album, as Miley has also co-directed a 55-minute visual album.

Following its June 6 premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, the film Something Beautiful (2025) will be in theaters in the United States for one day only: June 12.

Shot by famed cinematographer Benoît Debie — who lensed Nashville-based filmmaker Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers (2012) as well as the hit dance film Climax (2018) by Argentine filmmaker Gaspar Noé — Cyrus is describing the film as her response to Pink Floyd’s film The Wall (1979).

Speaking to Harper’s BAZAAR on the film and the album, Cyrus said:

“The visual component of this is driving the sound. It was important for me that every song has these healing sound properties. The songs, whether they’re about destruction or heartbreak or death, they’re presented in a way that is beautiful, because the nastiest times of our life do have a point of beauty. They are the shadow, they are the charcoal, they are the shading. You can’t have a painting without highlights and contrast.”
