A devastating accident on the CE-060 highway between Caririaçu and Juazeiro do Norte on Sunday, July 16, claimed the lives of an entire family, casting a deep shadow over the Cariri region. The victims included three-year-old Miguel Nascimento Gomes, his mother Hérida Nascimento da Silva, and his grandfather Sebastião Cícero Gomes.
The family was en route from Várzea Alegre to Juazeiro do Norte for a scheduled surgery for little Miguel. What was meant to be a hopeful journey for healing ended in tragedy, leaving the community in mourning and underscoring life’s fragility.
Around 7 a.m., their vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a five-meter-deep stream near Sítio Piripiri. Rescue efforts were hindered by the depth of the water, and sadly, no one survived the crash. The incident was confirmed by the Ceará Military Fire Department and reported by TV Verdes Mares.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, including potential road safety issues. The tragedy raises pressing questions about the conditions of regional highways and the need for improved infrastructure to protect lives.
