Jamey Johnson was on the bill at the Opry for August 1st, 2023. His duet with his father was not the only surprise. He also sang a surprise duet with newcomer Megan Maroney. The two sang “Angel From Montgomery,” a song they have performed many times.

Meet Jamey Johnson’s Dad, Howard Johnson

Jamey was raised in Montgomery, Alabama and inherited his love for country music from his parents. He was introduced to the likes of Alan Jackson and Alabama at an early age, thanks to his dad, Howard Johnson. Howard is country music lover, and has even taken the stage with his talented son multiple times over the years.

At the show, Howard joined Jamey on the legendary Grand Ole Opry stage. Singing Kris Kristofferson’s song “Why Me Lord,” which he released in 1972.

Kristofferson’s eventual wife Rita Coolidge and then-rising country star Larry Gatlin sang backup vocals on the recording. It was included on his album Jesus Was A Capricorn and eventually became the biggest hit of his career.

“Why Me, Lord” reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in July 1973.
