Ashlee Dahlberg’s 8-year-old son, Liam, came home with a headache but quickly worsened overnight. At the hospital, doctors diagnosed him with a rare, aggressive bacterial infection called Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) that had spread to his brain and spinal cord.
Though fully vaccinated, Liam likely caught Hib from an unvaccinated child, highlighting the dangers of vaccine hesitancy. Hib can cause deadly meningitis, and many children before vaccines suffered severe complications or death. Sadly, Liam’s condition was fatal.
In her grief, Ashlee urges parents to vaccinate their children to prevent this avoidable tragedy. Hib vaccines are about 95% effective, but unvaccinated carriers can still spread the disease.
A GoFundMe raised $54,000 for Liam’s family, honoring his bright spirit. Ashlee’s heartbreaking plea is clear: “Please vaccinate your children. Don’t let another family suffer like ours.”
