When she opened the door, Leo shouted, “Happy Birthday!” and held the cake out like a gift to a queen. Mrs. Patterson froze, then started crying. “This is the first birthday cake I’ve had in over forty years,” she whispered. Her husband had passed, and the celebrations had simply stopped. From then on, everything changed. She began waving from her porch, sharing stories, and even baking us cookies. For a school project, Leo interviewed her about her life, and when his teacher posted it online, her estranged son saw it. He called her. He visited.
