2 killed in fighter jet crash as aviators from California…see more

Two decorated naval aviators from California, Lt. Cmdr. Amanda Evans and Lt. Serena N. Wileman, were tragically killed when their EA-18G Growler aircraft crashed during a routine training flight near Mount Rainier. The crash occurred at an altitude of approximately 6,000 feet in a remote, wooded area, where difficult terrain and poor weather delayed rescue efforts. Both pilots were confirmed dead at the scene.

Evans was celebrated for her leadership and her participation in the all-female Super Bowl LVII flyover in 2023, marking 50 years of women in naval aviation. Wileman, a fellow California native, joined the “Zappers” Electronic Attack Squadron in 2021 and was known for her dedication and excellence. Both had recently returned from deployment supporting U.S. operations in the Middle East.

The Navy is conducting a full investigation into the cause of the crash. Commander Timothy Warburton expressed sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the Navy’s priority to care for the aviators’ families and their squadron. President Joe Biden also paid tribute, noting the pilots’ bravery and their service in protecting U.S. interests abroad.

As the investigation continues, Evans and Wileman are being honored for their courage and commitment. Their legacy lives on as an inspiration to future generations of aviators, and the Navy remains dedicated to supporting those they left behind.
