Two Minnesota Democrats Shot Overnight By Man Impersonating Police

Two Minnesota Democratic lawmakers were shot in their homes in separate incidents on Saturday in what officials are calling a politically motivated attack. State Senator John Hoffman and State House Speaker Melissa Hortman were both targeted by a man posing as a police officer. While Senator Hoffman and his wife survived after surgery, Speaker Hortman and her husband tragically died from their injuries.

Governor Tim Walz condemned the shootings as “an act of targeted political violence,” vowing full state support for the ongoing investigation. He praised Hortman as a dedicated public servant and emphasized that political disagreements must never be resolved through violence. The suspect, described as a white male wearing body armor and driving a police-style SUV, remains at large, prompting shelter-in-place orders in Champlin and Brooklyn Park.

Authorities, including the FBI, are leading a massive manhunt for the suspect, who exchanged gunfire with officers before fleeing. Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson expressed deep concern over the suspect’s impersonation of law enforcement, calling it a serious betrayal of public trust. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and avoid approaching the armed individual.

The incident has triggered widespread national outrage and mourning. Senator Amy Klobuchar and other officials offered condolences and highlighted the growing risks public servants face. Calls for stronger protections and a renewed commitment to peaceful political discourse have intensified, as the state and nation reel from the violence against two high-profile leaders.
