The Dauphin County community in Pennsylvania is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of 10-year-old Bryson Funk, who passed away just hours after leading his baseball team, the Linglestown Colts, to a championship win. On the night of June 11, Bryson delivered a stellar performance, pitching the final innings and sealing the victory with a strikeout. The next morning, however, tragedy struck when he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. He later died from myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart.
Bryson’s death sent shockwaves through the local community, especially among his teammates and close friend Elias Vilfort, who marked Bryson’s number “3” across their home field in his honor. Elias remembered Bryson not only as a fearless player—willing to slide through mud or do flips for a catch—but also as a best friend with whom he shared snacks, card collections, and roller coaster rides. Their All-Star season was meant to be a special one, as it was their first time playing on the same team.
To support the Funk family, Bryson’s relative Nicki Brantner organized a GoFundMe, which quickly raised over $45,000 from more than 700 donors. She described Bryson as an energetic and vibrant boy whose passing was completely unexpected. The overwhelming response, both in donations and prayers, showed how deeply Bryson had touched the lives of those around him. Parents, coaches, and classmates rallied together in grief and solidarity, hoping to ease the family’s burden.
Social media became a space for heartfelt tributes. From his cousin Armond Carter to fellow baseball parents, many shared memories of Bryson’s joyful nature and big heart. A Facebook group, the “Bryson Funk Memorial Wall,” was created to honor his memory. National attention also came from the Eric Paredes Save A Life Foundation, which used Bryson’s story to raise awareness about the hidden dangers of cardiac conditions in youth athletes. Though Bryson’s life was tragically short, his impact—on the field and in the hearts of those who knew him—will be remembered forever.
