A scenic hot air balloon ride turned tragic on June 21, 2025, when a balloon caught fire mid-flight over Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Eight people died and 13 were injured in what’s now one of Brazil’s deadliest balloon accidents.
Operated by Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, the balloon was carrying 21 passengers when flames erupted inside the basket. According to police, the pilot urged people to jump during an emergency descent. Thirteen leapt to safety, but the lighter basket caused the balloon to rise again, trapping the remaining passengers in the blaze before it crashed.
Early investigations suggest a backup burner may have reignited, possibly triggered by unstable ground conditions and wind during takeoff. Authorities are also probing whether a gas leak occurred as crews attempted to control the balloon using a truck and cables.
Among the victims were two couples, a mother and daughter, and a local athlete. Witnesses described a heartbreaking scene, with some passengers embracing in their final moments.
President Lula and Governor Jorginho Mello have offered condolences. The operator has suspended operations, and Brazil’s aviation agency has launched a full investigation.
