U.S. officials had anticipated retaliation following recent American strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
The Iranian government claimed the missile barrage was a proportional response, targeting military areas to avoid civilian harm. U.S. forces had also relocated naval vessels from Bahrain as a precaution ahead of the attack.
President Trump, speaking hours later, ignored the missile strike in his first remarks and instead focused on attacking media outlets for downplaying the success of U.S. strikes on Iran. Meanwhile, the White House confirmed Trump remains in close consultation with national security leaders as tensions in the region remain high.
