13-Year-Old Jerilynn Brown Dies in ‘Devastating’ House Fire Just Weeks After Beating Cancer

Thirteen-year-old Jerilynn Brown had just beaten cancer. After ringing the bell at Children’s Mercy Hospital, she was ready to enjoy life again. But on July 4, 2025, her dreams ended in tragedy when a fire—sparked by smoldering fireworks—engulfed her family’s Missouri farmhouse. Jerilynn was killed, her mother severely injured, and another man later died.

The fire began around 5 a.m. on the back deck, where used fireworks were left overnight. With no working smoke alarms, the family had little warning. Firefighters arrived quickly but were too late to save Jerilynn. The emotional toll on first responders was immense, made heavier by the knowledge that she had just survived a life-threatening illness.

Jerilynn’s father, Jerry, remembered her as a radiant, kind soul who brought joy to everyone, even during treatment. She had made heartfelt gifts for hospital staff and dreamed of visiting Hawaii. Now, her community is rallying around her family, raising funds to cover funeral costs and medical care.

Her story, while heartbreaking, is a powerful reminder of life’s fragility—and the importance of safety. Officials urge families to properly dispose of fireworks and install working smoke alarms. Jerilynn’s life was marked by courage and love. Let her memory be a call to care, protect, and never take tomorrow for granted.
