With the stage bathed in soft amber light, Jelly Roll took a quiet breath before launching into a stirring cover of Toby Keith’s classic. But this wasn’t just another performance — it was a soul-baring tribute to a country legend gone too soon. Fighting emotion with every lyric, Jelly Roll dedicated the song to Toby Keith’s family, saying, “This one’s for the man who taught us to stand tall and sing loud.” The audience stood in silence, tears falling, as one voice honored another in the most powerful way possible.

When Toby Keith passed away in February, his fans and loved ones were devastated. This includes the country star’s long list of famous friends, of course. That’s why, together, they created the perfect way to honor his legacy — by putting together a concert called Toby Keith: American Icon. The concert took place in Nashville at the end of July, and it featured performances that were sure to melt hearts.

Some of the performers from that night include Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Jelly Roll. In fact, Jelly Roll’s emotional performance of a Toby Keith classic has been shared online, and it’s touching fans deeply. Part of the reason why is because the country singer takes a moment to dedicate the song to Keith’s family. Watch the unforgettable performance in the video below.

“Toby inspired me to be a better American, a better human, a better songwriter,” Jelly Roll shares, “and with songs like this, most importantly, he inspired me to be a better father.”

As many fans have pointed out, it’s clear that Jelly Roll is feeling emotional while singing, maybe even a bit nervous. But his vulnerability only makes the performance that much better.

“You did great with that tribute to Toby Keith. He is smiling down at the good job you did,” one fan shares in the comment section, with another adding, “This is one of my favorite songs from Toby Keith. Toby cared about his family and his friends.”

If you’re sad about missing this concert live, you haven’t missed out just yet! The show will air on NBC at the end of this month: Wednesday, August 28.
