Airport remains shut down following fireball plane crash

London Southend Airport remains closed after a tragic plane crash on Sunday afternoon that resulted in at least one fatality. The incident occurred just before 16:00 BST when emergency services were alerted to a 12-metre aircraft engulfed in flames on the runway. The crash has deeply shaken the local community and prompted an ongoing investigation by aviation and law enforcement authorities.

The aircraft involved belonged to Zeusch Aviation, a Dutch aviation company. The company confirmed that its SUZ1 flight was involved in the crash and stated it is fully cooperating with investigators. The plane had departed from Athens, made a scheduled stop in Pula, Croatia, and landed briefly in Southend, where it was set to refuel before continuing to its final destination in Lelystad, Netherlands.

Eyewitness John Johnson, from Billericay, described the horrifying moment the plane took off and immediately veered sharply to the left. “Within a few seconds, the aircraft almost inverted and hit the ground. There was a huge fireball,” he told the BBC. His account suggests a serious mechanical or structural failure may have occurred shortly after takeoff.

Southend Airport chief executive Jude Winstanley confirmed the airport’s closure and extended condolences to those affected. She noted that a full investigation is underway and that the airport will remain closed until authorities complete the necessary assessments and ensure safety.Officials have not yet confirmed the number of casualties or the identities of those on board. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
