“Amarillo By Morning” rides again—and this time, it’s bigger than ever. American Idol runner-up John Foster has saddled up alongside country legends George Strait and Alan Jackson for a comeback moment straight out of a country fan’s dreams. In a powerful tribute to Alan Jackson before his retirement, Foster steps into the spotlight with the first song released under his $1 million deal with Strait’s label. The moment he sang, it was like the torch had officially been passed. Every seat was filled, every eye wet with tears. A new voice, an old soul—and a country classic reborn.

Introduction

Just weeks after winning over the nation as the runner-up on American Idol 2025, 24-year-old John Foster is proving that silver can shine just as bright as gold.

In a bold Nashville move, Foster has inked a seven-figure contract with George Strait’s own record label—and his inaugural release under this banner is a soul-stirring rendition of the time-honored classic “Amarillo By Morning.”

Far more than a simple cover, this version serves as both a heartfelt tribute and a symbolic passing of the torch. During an emotional press gathering, Foster explained that his recording was crafted as a final salute to country legend Alan Jackson, who will officially retire later this year after an illustrious career.

“Alan was one of my heroes,” Foster confessed, his voice catching with emotion. “This recording exists because of him. When I played the demo for George, he looked me in the eye and said, ‘Let’s make history.’”

Retaining the steel-guitar twang and timeless spirit of Strait’s 1982 hit, Foster injects his own youthful grit and heartfelt sincerity. He even penned a brand-new bridge late one Texas night, reflecting on his journey from small-town dreamer to country music’s newest face.

When Foster unveiled the final mix to a reel of country royalty—including Reba McEntire, Travis Tritt, and Alan Jackson himself—the room fell silent before giving way to tears and a standing ovation. “He’s not just singing country,” Reba declared. “He is country.”

Already climbing the charts, “Amarillo By Morning (John Foster Tribute Edition)” is being hailed as the defining debut of a new generation. With a full-length album in production, a summer tour opening for George Strait, and whispers of a duet with Carrie Underwood, Foster’s journey is only just beginning.

“I’m not trying to be the next Alan or George,” Foster told Billboard. “I simply want to honor what they’ve given us…and keep singing straight from the heart.” And judging by the response so far, he’s doing exactly that.
