Two-time Olympic gold medalist Laura Dahlmeier has died at age 31 following a climbing accident on Laila Peak in Pakistan. A falling rock reportedly struck the German biathlete during the ascent. Her partner, Marina Eva, sent a distress signal, but poor weather delayed rescue teams, who reached the site the following day.
Born in 1993, Dahlmeier rose to prominence in biathlon, a sport blending skiing and shooting. She became a global star in 2017, winning five golds and a silver at the Biathlon World Championships. At the 2018 Winter Olympics, she made history by winning gold in both the sprint and pursuit, along with a bronze in the individual event.
Dahlmeier retired in 2019 at just 25, explaining that her passion for high-level competition had faded. She later became a certified mountain guide, wrote children’s books, and took part in environmental and rescue work across Bavaria.
Her death has shocked the sports and mountaineering worlds. Dahlmeier’s legacy lives on through her historic achievements and her enduring commitment to nature and adventure.
