Beach-goers killed when sea mines wash up and explode

Three vacationers—a woman and two men—were killed on Sunday, August 10, when explosive devices, believed to be drifting mines, detonated in prohibited swimming areas between Karolino-Buhaz and Zatoka, a Black Sea resort region in Ukraine. Officials say the victims were swimming despite repeated warnings about the dangers posed by mines washed ashore from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Regional governor Oleh Kiper stressed that the incident proves how fatally dangerous unchecked waters can be, noting that prohibited areas are marked after thorough safety inspections. Police confirmed two explosions occurred, and the identities of the deceased have not yet been released.

Since Russia’s 2022 invasion, both sides have deployed naval mines to protect waters and ports, but shifting weather and currents have caused some to drift into tourist zones. Authorities have intensified warnings to beachgoers, urging them to stay out of restricted areas.

The tragedy comes as U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, 2025, to discuss efforts toward ending the war. The high-profile summit is expected to focus on de-escalation and potential humanitarian measures.
