A grandmother in Oldtown, Idaho, unknowingly took the last photo of her three-year-old granddaughter, Scarlett Jensen, just minutes before a tragic hit-and-run claimed the child’s life on October 7, 2022. Scarlett and her two-year-old brother, Henry, were playing under her care when a speeding Chevy Tahoe drove down their private driveway, striking both children. Despite her desperate attempt to shield them, Scarlett was killed instantly, and Henry, along with their grandmother, suffered critical injuries.
The driver fled but was later arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison. Henry endured a fractured spine, broken ribs, and a week in the pediatric ICU, while his grandmother recovered from multiple broken bones. Their mother, Samantha Jensen, described the days following as “an eternity,” filled with grief and uncertainty.
Amid the heartbreak, Samantha found solace in a single photograph—captured moments before the tragedy—showing Scarlett safe, happy, and loved. For her, it preserved the peace of Scarlett’s final moments, untainted by the violence that followed. “That’s how I want to remember her,” Samantha said.
Today, as the Jensen family continues to heal, Scarlett’s memory lives on through that image, shared stories, and the love she left behind—a powerful reminder of life’s fragility and the importance of cherishing every moment.
