Collectors, also known as numismatists, are especially drawn to “fancy serial numbers”—unique patterns that make a bill rare. Low numbers like 00000001, repeating digits (88888888), or patterns like “ladders” (12345678) are highly desirable. In pristine condition, these seemingly ordinary bills can fetch well over face value.
Other valuable finds include “radar” bills that read the same forward and backward (like 01133110) or “birthday” notes that form significant dates (like 07041876). “Star notes,” printed as replacements for damaged bills and marked with a star, also carry special value—especially when paired with rare number patterns.
The rarest of all may be the “binary repeater,” made up of only two digits in a repeating sequence (e.g., 01010101). These can command prices of $5,000 or more. So next time you’re handed change, don’t overlook your singles—one might just be a small paper treasure in disguise.
