How John Thompson Survived Losing Both of His Arms

John Thompson was just 18 when a tragic accident on his family farm in North Dakota changed his life forever. While unloading barley using machinery, he slipped on ice and fell into the power takeoff shaft, severing both arms above the elbows. Alone and bleeding, he managed to walk 100 yards, open the door with his teeth, and call for help using his nose and a pencil. His quick thinking and determination saved his life.

He was flown to Minneapolis, where doctors performed a complex six-hour surgery to reattach his arms. The recovery was long and difficult—he spent weeks in a coma and underwent multiple surgeries, but amazed everyone by lifting his arms just a month later. His story quickly made national headlines, turning him into a reluctant celebrity and a symbol of resilience.

Though he was overwhelmed by media attention, Thompson used his platform to advocate for farm safety and became a motivational speaker. He met celebrities, visited the White House, and received support from around the world. Despite dropping out of college, he inspired thousands through public speaking and continued his education in his own way.

Later in life, Thompson faced mental health struggles and physical challenges, including limited motion and no hand function. Yet he rebuilt his life, remodeled his home, and continued to live with strength and humility. His story is one of survival, courage, and the power of choosing to fight when everything seems lost.
