Sixteen-year-old Bryce Brooks of Atlanta lost his life while showing extraordinary bravery on a family trip to Pensacola. When he and friends saw four younger children being dragged into a dangerous rip current, Bryce rushed into the water to save them. He managed to help but was soon pulled under himself. Family friend Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson II tried to rescue him but was also overcome, and both later died despite emergency efforts.
Bryce’s school and community mourned deeply, remembering him as kind, talented, and full of promise. His classmates at Maynard Jackson High honored him with a balloon release, while his mother, Crystal Brooks, said her son “stepped into manhood” through his selfless act. Bryce was an honor roll student, a music lover, fashion club member, and loving big brother.
Support soon poured in. The nonprofit Get Your Teach On raised more than $78,000 for the family, recognizing his heroism. To honor his legacy, the family launched the Bryce Brooks Foundation, dedicated to drowning prevention and water safety. The foundation now provides free swim lessons and scholarships for lifeguard training, giving other young people the skills to save lives.
Though Bryce’s life was tragically cut short, his story continues to inspire. His sacrifice not only saved others that day but also sparked a movement that will protect countless more. In his family’s words, he left this world not just as a teenager, but as a true hero.
