The University of Kentucky is mourning sophomore nursing student Kate Kaufling, who passed away on March 31, 2024, at just 20 years old after a courageous fight with osteosarcoma.

Kate was a vibrant member of campus life, serving on the UK Dance Team and as part of Tri Delta sorority, where she was known for her energy and kindness. Her twin sister, Abbey—also on the dance team—wrote in tribute, “My sweet Kate, you were my person.”

University leaders remembered her as both a dedicated student and a gifted performer. “Her smile could light up a room, and everyone on the UKDT loved her,” said head coach Dawn Walters.

Kate’s passing leaves behind her parents, Holly and Steve, and her twin sister Abbey, but her light continues in the lives she touched. As friends and teammates grieve, they honor not only her memory but also her courage, joy, and love of life.
