Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group, two of the largest owners of ABC affiliates, announced they will preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! after Kimmel inaccurately linked Charlie Kirk’s suspected killer to the MAGA movement. Both companies said they would replace the show with news programming, citing a responsibility to maintain respectful discourse during a tense national moment.
The remarks, which tied Kirk’s death to political opponents, directly contradicted law enforcement statements that the accused shooter, Tyler Robinson, held left-leaning views with no known conservative ties. Disney suspended the show indefinitely, calling the comments “ill-timed and insensitive,” though later reinstated it. Despite this, many affiliates opted not to air the program.
Inside the show, staff expressed doubt about its survival. One anonymous member suggested that even a public apology may not be enough to quell criticism and warned Disney could choose to cancel the show rather than weather future controversies. The FCC also signaled interest, with Chairman Brendan Carr saying he is weighing whether an investigation is warranted.
