On September 10, Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while hosting a debate at Utah Valley University. The attack happened in front of about 3,000 people, triggering chaos as the crowd ducked and fled. Authorities later arrested Tyler Robinson, 22, accused of firing the shot from a rooftop nearly 200 yards away.
Robinson now faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder, firearm discharge, obstruction of justice, and tampering with witnesses. Utah County prosecutors confirmed they will seek the death penalty, calling the crime one of the most serious cases in recent history.
Disturbing videos of the shooting quickly circulated online. In them, Kirk appeared to flinch, drop the microphone, and collapse as blood spilled from his wound. Some viewers believed his final movements showed signs of brain trauma, but experts disagreed. Neuropsychologist Derek Van Schaik explained that what looked like stiffening was actually an involuntary defensive reflex.
According to Van Schaik’s analysis, Kirk lost consciousness almost instantly, within four-tenths of a second of being shot. He emphasized that Kirk’s brain never had time to register pain or fear. “There was no panic in his last moments,” he said. “He simply blacked out.”
