A serious accident unfolded on November 20 at kilometer 59 of the Mexico–Querétaro Highway near Huehuetoca when a heavy trailer lost control and slammed into multiple vehicles. The runaway truck struck a roadside bank before crashing into five cars and a pickup, blocking all lanes and creating a massive traffic jam.
Authorities blamed slick pavement from earlier rain and excessive speed as key factors. Witnesses said the trailer was moving too fast for the conditions, leaving the driver unable to stop in time. Investigators are also reviewing possible brake issues, maintenance failures, or driver fatigue.
Emergency crews responded quickly, treating several people for minor injuries. Remarkably, no lives were lost despite the severity of the collision. Teams worked to clear debris, contain fuel leaks, and redirect stranded motorists through alternate routes.
Later that day, a second trailer accident at kilometer 95.5 near Soyaniquilpan spilled fuel and shut down both directions for hours. The two incidents disrupted trade and commuter traffic along the busy corridor, sparking renewed calls for stricter truck inspections, rain-speed limits, and tougher rest rules for drivers.
