It Started With Two Deer
I was tossing hay when I noticed them—two deer stepping out of the woods. They didn’t flinch or bolt like deer normally do. They simply stood there, silent and unafraid, the smaller one fixing me with an unblinking stare as if it knew something I didn’t. I snapped a photo and joked online about “unexpected visitors,” never imagining what would happen next.
The smaller deer approached the fence and dropped a bundle at my feet—a dark fabric-wrapped parcel that felt deliberate, human. Inside was an old wooden box holding a tarnished silver locket etched with strange, unrecognizable symbols. Before I could react, the deer turned back toward the woods, pausing as though waiting for me to follow. And I did.
The forest grew unnaturally quiet as I trailed it to a hidden clearing dominated by a massive, twisted oak. Beneath its roots, freshly disturbed soil concealed a stone tablet carved with the same symbols and a hollow containing a sealed parchment. When I opened it, the message read: “For the one who is chosen: The truth is not safe. The truth is not gentle. But if you seek it, follow the signs. This is only the beginning.”
The locket in my pocket felt heavy, and by morning I was combing local archives. That’s when I discovered a legend about a secret order called The Veil—its mark the very symbols I’d found, its messengers the deer, its key the locket now in my hands. Ever since, I’ve felt watched. Someone else knows I’ve been chosen. And now I understand: not everything in the woods is random.
