Beloved actress shares update from hospital bed amid stage 4 cancer battle

Magda Szubanski, beloved for her humor and heart in Kath & Kim and the Babe films, recently shared a deeply personal update that revealed both her vulnerability and her incredible strength. The 64-year-old actress, now undergoing treatment for stage-four mantle cell lymphoma, posted a video from her hospital bed thanking a young fan, ten-year-old Annabella from Adelaide, who had dressed up as her character Sharon Strzelecki for Book Week. “I’m in here having chemo and it really cheered me up,” Szubanski said with a tired but radiant smile. “I’m really touched—that was such a beautiful thing to do.”

In her caption, she didn’t hide the toll treatment has taken: “Chemo is smacking me around right now.” It was a rare glimpse of raw honesty from a woman who has built her career on bringing laughter to others. Her diagnosis came in May, discovered incidentally during a breast screening that revealed swollen lymph nodes. “It is one of the nasty ones, unfortunately,” she admitted, sharing that she’d shaved her head ahead of chemotherapy but remained hopeful thanks to her doctors and the ever-evolving world of cancer treatment.

Even amid the hardship, her humor remains intact. In a recent message to fans, she joked about maintaining a “safe distance” due to her weakened immune system: “Don’t hug me, kiss me, or breathe anywhere near me! Wave enthusiastically from a safe distance and know I love you madly.” It was classic Magda—mixing vulnerability with wit, reminding everyone that laughter still has a place, even in the darkest chapters.

Messages of love and support have poured in from across Australia and beyond. For decades, Szubanski has been more than a comedian; she’s been a source of warmth, authenticity, and courage. Now, as she faces her toughest battle yet, she’s continuing to inspire—showing that true strength lies not in hiding the struggle, but in facing it with grace, humor, and an open heart.
