Late Monday night, October 20, 2025, tragedy struck on Interstate 8 near Fairmount Avenue in San Diego County. Officer Lauren Craven, 25, of the La Mesa Police Department, was fatally hit while assisting at the scene of a multi-vehicle crash. Though she had not been dispatched, Officer Craven stopped on her way home from duty to help — a final act of courage that cost her life.

The crash began when two vehicles collided, leaving one overturned in the eastbound lanes. A third car then struck the overturned vehicle, killing its 19-year-old driver. As Officer Craven rendered aid, another vehicle barreled into the scene, striking her and several others before a fifth car was caught in the aftermath. Both Officer Craven and the young driver were pronounced dead at the scene, while several others sustained injuries.

Authorities with the California Highway Patrol are investigating the chain of collisions, examining whether speed, distraction, or impairment played a role. The La Mesa Police Department mourned the loss of one of its youngest and most dedicated officers, describing her actions as “selfless and heroic.” Governor Gavin Newsom ordered flags at the State Capitol to fly at half-staff in her honor.

Officer Craven joined the department in February 2024 and had recently celebrated her 25th birthday. Known for her compassion and professionalism, she pursued law enforcement after surviving a personal assault in college — determined to help others as she once had been helped. Her passing has united the San Diego community in grief and renewed awareness of California’s Move Over Law, a lifesaving reminder to slow down and change lanes for stopped emergency vehicles. A memorial is being planned to honor her legacy of courage, kindness, and service.
