The young athlete had played as recently as Monday night, when he scored his first career touchdown during the Cowboys’ game against the Arizona Cardinals. His death was confirmed by the team in an emotional announcement on Thursday morning.
“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the organization said in a statement. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.” The NFL also released a statement expressing condolences, saying it is in contact with the Cowboys to provide support to the team, players, and staff.
Kneeland’s agent confirmed the news on X, formerly Twitter, as tributes began pouring in from teammates, fans, and fellow players across the league. The NFL described him as a “rising talent with infectious energy and unwavering commitment,” adding that his loss was “deeply felt throughout the football community.”
Born in Michigan, Kneeland played college football for Western Michigan University from 2019 to 2023 before being selected 56th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. He appeared in 11 games as a rookie and had started three this season. Known for his drive and heart both on and off the field, Kneeland leaves behind a legacy of promise, perseverance, and passion for the game.
