Born Marian Lois Shields in Chicago in 1937, she grew up on the South Side as one of seven children. She married Fraser C. When Barack Obama became president in 2008, Marian moved into the White House, a rare step for a presidential parent, to help provide stability and love for her granddaughters, Malia and Sasha.
