‘Dynasty’ & ‘The Paper Chase’ star dies at 98

Television is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved familiar faces. Betty Harford, best known for her role as Mrs. Gunnerson, the loyal Carrington family cook on Dynasty, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025, in Santa Barbara, California. She was 98 years old. The news was confirmed by her close friend Wendy Mitchell, who shared that Harford died surrounded by family.

Harford’s portrayal of Mrs. Gunnerson from 1981 to 1989 — and again in the 1991 Dynasty reunion — made her a fan favorite. Her character’s sharp wit and heart of gold offered both humor and warmth in the opulent world of the Carringtons. Viewers fondly remember her famous “lamb stew for Blake,” a running joke that became part of Dynasty lore. Fans across social media have paid tribute, celebrating her as “a true gem of television’s golden age.”

Before her soap opera fame, Harford’s talent graced countless television classics, including The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Paper Chase, where she played Mrs. Nottingham, the efficient secretary to Professor Kingsfield. On film, she appeared alongside Hollywood icons such as Kirk Douglas in Spartacus (1960) and Natalie Wood in Inside Daisy Clover (1965), where she played Wood’s sister, Gloria.

Born in New York City in 1927, Harford began her career on the stage and went on to collaborate with renowned producer John Houseman. She was married twice — to sculptor Oliver Andrews and later to Hungarian actor Sándor de Naszody — and is survived by her son, Chris, and her grandsons. Betty Harford’s long and varied career left an indelible mark on Hollywood, remembered for her humor, heart, and timeless performances that will continue to captivate audiences for generations.
