She passed away at the age of 84 at her home in Woodbury, Connecticut, following a battle with cancer and complications from treatment, her husband, Christopher Pelham, confirmed. Franz was often hailed as “America’s Judi Dench,” known for her grace, power, and emotional depth on stage and screen.

Her rise began Off-Broadway, where she originated the unforgettable role of Sister Mary Ignatius in Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You, earning an Obie Award and, surprisingly, the admiration of nuns who had initially protested the play.
