I Sacrificed Everything for Him—But He Threw Me Away in Public

My name is Marissa. I’m 49, a single mother who has spent nearly twenty years working multiple jobs just to keep my son Logan’s life steady—every tuition bill, every textbook, every late grocery run paid for with exhausted hands. When a janitor position opened at his university, it felt like the first real stability I’d had in years: steady hours, reliable pay, health benefits. I expected Logan to be happy for me, but instead he recoiled, calling it “embarrassing” and worrying his friends might see me.

The next day, while I was cleaning one of the busiest academic buildings, Logan walked by with his friends. I braced for him to ignore me, but what he did was worse. He looked me straight in the eyes, then loudly told his friends not to touch the doors because “the cleaning crew always leaves streaks—you never know what they drag in.” His friends laughed. I stood there wiping the same spot over and over to keep from breaking, feeling smaller than I ever have.

That evening, I confronted him, hoping for a flicker of remorse. Instead, he shrugged and said I shouldn’t have taken the job if it bothered him so much. No apology. No acknowledgment. Just cold dismissal. I lay awake that night wondering how the boy I raised with everything I had could treat me like something beneath him.

Now I’m torn. I need this job. I need the stability. But the pain of his words lingers. Do I quit and protect my heart? Do I force him to face what he did? Or do I step back and let him sit with the consequences of his cruelty until maturity finally reaches him? I keep asking myself if I’m overreacting—or if I’ve finally seen who my son has become.
