A bus crash on a dangerous mountain road in Bolivia has killed more than 30 people, according to police. The vehicle plunged nearly 800 meters into a ravine in the Yocalla district in the country’s southwest, leaving the nation in shock.
Fourteen others were injured, including four children, with several reported to be in critical condition. The crash occurred on a route between the cities of Potosà and Oruro, an area known for steep terrain and treacherous roads.
Authorities believe speeding played a role. Police said the driver was unable to control the bus, a common risk on Bolivia’s mountainous highways, where narrow roads and sharp curves leave little room for error.
This is the deadliest traffic accident reported in Bolivia so far this year. Road fatalities are frequent in the country, which averages about 1,400 traffic-related deaths annually, underscoring the ongoing danger faced by travelers on its roads.
