Vice President JD Vance is facing intense online backlash after commenting on the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old man killed during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Many critics say Vance’s remarks appeared dismissive of Pretti’s death and shifted attention away from the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Pretti was killed Saturday morning near Nicollet Avenue during an operation involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Video footage circulating online shows him filming agents with his phone, being pepper-sprayed, and tackled before shots were fired. While officials have claimed he was armed, no public evidence has yet been released to support that assertion.
Instead of directly addressing the shooting, Vance posted on X about a separate incident in which off-duty ICE and CBP officers were allegedly doxed and surrounded at a restaurant. He criticized local officials for what he described as a failure to cooperate with federal enforcement, arguing that this environment of “chaos” contributes to deadly outcomes like the one involving Pretti.
The response was swift and harsh. Many users accused Vance of prioritizing federal agents over a civilian death, calling his post insensitive and misleading. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez condemned the remarks, saying they amounted to defending the killing of Americans exercising constitutional rights, as the debate over immigration enforcement and accountability continues to intensify.
