Since the FBI released surveillance images connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, online speculation has surged — much of it centered on the suspect’s eyes. The masked, armed individual appears outside the 84-year-old’s Tucson home in the early hours of her disappearance. The case has drawn national attention in part because Nancy is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of Today.
The images and video were released publicly by Kash Patel, who said law enforcement worked with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and private-sector partners to recover footage from residual backend data after recording devices had reportedly been removed or damaged. In the video, the suspect appears to tamper with a doorbell camera while wearing a balaclava, gloves, a zipped jacket, and a backpack. Authorities have not confirmed the suspect’s gender.

Social media users quickly began analyzing visible features — particularly the eyebrows and eye shape — with some speculating the suspect may be female, while others pointed to body movement in the footage and argued the opposite. Former FBI agent Mark Harrigan told the New York Post that the firearm carry method seen in the footage appeared “non-conventional,” suggesting possible inexperience. However, law enforcement has emphasized that public assumptions based on limited visuals can be misleading.
The release of the footage has reportedly generated a surge in tips. Authorities briefly detained and questioned a local man but released him without charges. As the investigation continues, officials urge the public to provide factual information rather than draw conclusions from appearance alone. For now, Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains unresolved — and patience, as investigators stress, is as important as vigilance.
