President Donald Trump has announced plans to introduce a new crime-focused bill aimed at improving safety in Washington, D.C. He said the proposal would initially focus on the nation’s capital and expressed confidence that Republicans would strongly support tougher measures to address crime in the city.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that the Department of Justice will work closely with both local and federal law enforcement to combat violent crime in Washington. Trump also mentioned seeking a relatively small amount of federal funding to repair streets and improve the overall appearance of the city.
Senator Lindsey Graham confirmed that the White House is preparing a draft proposal that he and Senator Katie Britt will review. Supporters of the effort say the goal is to strengthen public safety in the nation’s capital and believe the initiative should receive broad support in Congress.
However, the plan may face political and timing challenges. When Congress returns after Labor Day, lawmakers will also have to decide whether to extend Trump’s temporary control over the D.C. police system—an action that would require 60 votes in the Senate and could encounter resistance from Democratic lawmakers.
