The quiet night along the Pascagoula River turned into a life-or-death struggle when a car carrying three teenage girls plunged into the water. As the vehicle sank and the current pulled at them in the darkness, their cries for help echoed across the riverbank.
Sixteen-year-old Corion Evans was the only person close enough to act. Without a life jacket or equipment, he jumped into the river and swam toward the girls, fighting the current as gasoline and debris swirled around them. Realizing there was no time to wait for emergency crews, he began pulling them toward the shore one by one.
Evans managed to guide all three girls to safety despite the darkness and strong water. When a responding police officer was later swept under by the current while trying to help, Evans went back into the river again to assist.
