According to reports, the bus crashed into a hillside at kilometer 72 and then fell more than 100 meters into a ravine, landing near the Rímac River. The scale of the fall made the incident especially devastating and led to a rapid emergency response.
Among those who died were older adults, at least one minor, and the driver. Firefighters, police, and surviving passengers worked to rescue the injured, including children, and the victims were taken to a hospital in Chosica for treatment.
Authorities later said one of the main suspected causes was excessive speed. According to transportation officials, the bus was traveling at 94 km/h in an area where the speed limit was only 35 km/h, raising serious concerns about driver recklessness.
