The kitchen seemed to shrink around Claire, William, and the barefoot little boy as rain tapped against the tall windows and the fire crackled beneath the copper stove. William stared at the photograph in the boy’s hands and instantly recognized the young woman with laughing eyes and dark hair blowing in the wind. “Elena…” he whispered, and the boy looked up cautiously, asking if he knew his mother.
