Chapter 2
That night, the mansion changed forever as doctors examined Daniel, fresh clothes were brought from the city, and the child who had arrived barefoot and hungry was placed in a bedroom larger than most apartments. But despite the warmth and luxury around him, Daniel still looked afraid, sitting stiffly at the edge of the enormous bed as Claire brought him hot chocolate. When she gently told him he did not have to be scared anymore, Daniel quietly replied that people always said that before they left. Claire tried to reassure him, but then Daniel asked if William truly wanted him. Before she could answer, William appeared in the doorway holding a worn box filled with old letters—every one addressed to Elena, every one returned unopened. He realized his father had intercepted them all, meaning Elena had never abandoned him; she had died believing William had abandoned her. Sitting before Daniel, William admitted that he had failed his mother, but promised he would never fail him. For the first time since entering the mansion, Daniel gave a small, uncertain smile, and William felt both his heart heal and break at once.
Chapter 3
The next morning, chaos spread through the Harrington estate when Daniel wandered barefoot into the private garden at sunrise and accidentally terrified the security team. A guard brought him to William’s office, where Daniel stood clutching a crushed strawberry and softly admitted he had been hungry. Seeing fear flash across his son’s face, William immediately lowered his voice and told him he would never need permission to eat in that house. Daniel looked stunned, as if kindness itself felt suspicious. Throughout the day, the news spread among the staff that Mr. Harrington had a son, and nobody could believe how quickly the cold billionaire began changing. He smiled for real, taught Daniel how to use the coffee machine for hot chocolate, and let the boy sit beside his desk drawing dinosaurs while he reviewed contracts. Claire watched quietly as Daniel began following William everywhere, cautiously at first, then with growing hope. When Daniel noticed there were no family pictures and asked why, William answered that he had thought he had no family left. Daniel walked to the desk and said simply, “You do now,” leaving William close to tears again.
Chapter 4
Three days later, disaster arrived in the form of Charles Harrington, William’s father, stepping into the mansion with cold authority and demanding to see the child. William appeared at the staircase and warned him that he had not been invited, but Charles cruelly called Daniel a street child and questioned his place in the family. Daniel shrank behind William, and Claire saw him flinch when Charles dismissed Elena as a dead woman making a convenient claim. Furious, William confronted his father, accusing him of forging letters, lying for years, and letting Elena die believing she had been abandoned. Charles showed no remorse and insisted Elena would have ruined the family, but William answered that Charles was the one who had ruined it. When Charles coldly declared that Daniel did not belong there, William replied that Daniel belonged there more than he did. Asked whether he would choose the child over his own father, William answered without hesitation: “Yes.” After Charles left, Daniel whispered that he could leave if he was causing trouble, but William knelt before him and told him this was his home, and anyone who had a problem with that could leave instead. Daniel finally hugged him first, and everyone in the mansion understood that the lonely billionaire who had everything money could buy had finally found the one thing he could never purchase back—his family.
