President Donald Trump addressed the deadly midair collision near Reagan National Airport in a briefing, offering condolences for the victims. He confirmed there were no survivors and acknowledged the tragedy as a moment of “anguish,” taking solace in the belief that the victims are now in the care of a “loving God.”
Trump also directed attention to the ongoing investigation, announcing the appointment of Christopher Rocheleau as acting FAA commissioner. He voiced concerns about the state of the Federal Aviation Administration under former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, criticizing his focus on diversity initiatives instead of improving aviation safety.
Reports have confirmed that U.S. and Russian figure skaters, including former world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, were on the flight. The victims were returning from a training camp in Wichita, Kansas, when the plane collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. The crash resulted in 28 confirmed fatalities, including 27 from the plane and one from the helicopter.
As investigations continue, questions remain about the events leading up to the collision, including the communication between the two aircraft and air traffic control. The tragic loss has left the skating community, and many others, mourning the victims’ deaths.
