Interim D.C. U.S. Attorney Ed Martin has launched a preliminary investigation into Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) over comments he made in 2020 targeting Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch. The investigation comes amid renewed scrutiny of remarks Schumer made before the justices’ 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
On March 4, 2020, Schumer warned the justices of consequences if they voted to restrict abortion rights, stating, “You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price.” These comments sparked concerns that Schumer was threatening the justices, though he later clarified that he never intended to do so.
Schumer’s remarks led to an ethics complaint, but no action was taken at the time. In response to the renewed attention, U.S. Attorney Ed Martin confirmed that a preliminary inquiry into the comments had been opened.
This investigation is part of broader concerns about public officials’ rhetoric and its potential impact on the judicial system, highlighting the delicate balance between free speech and the need for judicial independence.
