The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate confirmed Pam Bondi as attorney general following President Trump’s nomination. The vote passed with a 54-46 majority. Senate Democrats had delayed the vote by a week, and the Judiciary Committee had initially canceled its hearing for Bondi’s confirmation.
Bondi, a former Florida attorney general, testified before the Judiciary Committee last month, pledging to restore integrity to the Department of Justice. She expressed her commitment to eliminating partisanship and ensuring fair justice for all Americans if confirmed.
During the confirmation hearing, Bondi faced tough questioning from Senate Democrats, particularly Senator Adam Schiff. He pressed her on whether she would advise President Trump against issuing blanket pardons for low-level offenders involved in the January 6 Capitol riot.
Tensions escalated when Schiff criticized Bondi’s ability to manage the attorney general role, questioning her workload. Bondi responded by highlighting Schiff’s past censure by Congress, as well as pivoting to criticize California’s crime rate.
