Senator Gary Peters of Michigan announced he will not seek a third term in 2026, leaving his Senate seat up for grabs. After serving two terms in the Senate and three in the U.S. House, Peters said it was time to step aside and allow for new leadership.
His decision presents a challenge for Michigan Democrats, especially with the state’s recent shift to Republican support in the 2024 election.
With the Senate race now wide open, former U.S. transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg is expected to be a top contender. Having relocated to Michigan after his 2020 presidential bid, Buttigieg’s name has been floated by Democrats seeking a strong candidate for the 2026 race.
Peters’ departure also complicates the upcoming gubernatorial race, as Michigan Democrats face multiple key elections in 2026. Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s term is ending, and several candidates, including Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, have already entered the race.
