White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt denied that the Trump administration’s buyout offers for federal workers were meant to “purge” critics of the president.
The buyout, which offers benefits until September for workers who resign by February 6, is part of Trump’s plan to reduce government spending and encourage employees to return to work.
Leavitt argued that the program is a popular option, as only 6% of Washington’s federal workforce actually shows up to work. She stressed that workers could leave with generous compensation, and the policy fulfills the president’s campaign promises.
The buyout offer applies to 2 million federal workers, excluding military, postal, and national security employees. Critics, like President Everett Kelley, warn it could disrupt essential services by removing experienced workers, and they argue it reflects an anti-worker agenda.
