In 2018, Melvin Harris, a 41-year-old father from Phoenix, pleaded guilty to manslaughter after a confrontation that led to a man’s death. Harris, who initially faced second-degree murder charges, maintained that his actions were in defense of his daughter.
The incident took place on August 2, 2018, when Harris drove to a QT convenience store near 19th and Dunlap Avenues. His daughter, who had been using the restroom, told him that a man had tried to force his way into her locked stall. Store security escorted the man, identified as Leon Armstrong, outside, and Harris’ daughter pointed him out. Harris spoke with the security guard, stating he would handle the situation himself.
Witnesses reported seeing Harris strike Armstrong, knocking him to the ground, and continuing to assault him before leaving. Armstrong sustained a traumatic brain injury and died a few days later.
