Sen. Adam Schiff expressed strong opposition on Monday to Kash Patel’s expected confirmation as FBI director, calling it a “devastating blow” to the agency. He warned it would cause long-lasting damage and demoralize the FBI and Department of Justice.
Despite Schiff’s concerns, Republicans are backing Patel’s nomination, citing the need for reform at the FBI due to alleged political bias under the Biden administration. Sen. Chuck Grassley defended Patel, claiming the FBI had been “infected with political bias” and needed cleaning up.
Schiff and Sen. Alex Padilla both serve on the Judiciary Committee, which approved Patel’s nomination along party lines. The full Senate is set to vote on his confirmation next week.
Republicans have long accused the FBI of political bias, particularly in its investigations related to Trump and the January 6 riot. Grassley argued Patel is the right choice to address these issues and lead the FBI.
