Wildlife officials are warning about “alien egg pods” appearing in lakes and rivers across the U.S. These jelly-like creatures, known as bryozoans, can clone themselves and are being spotted in large numbers.
While some people are concerned, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife reassures the public that bryozoans are harmless, native microorganisms that help clean water and serve as prey for aquatic animals.
Dating back 470 million years, these creatures thrive in warmer months but die off in colder temperatures, leaving behind egg sacs for new growth in spring.
Officials encourage people not to panic and to appreciate their role in the ecosystem.
