MSNBC announced that Jen Psaki will take over the 9 p.m. EDT slot from Alex Wagner starting in late April, as part of a major network shakeup that includes the departure of Joy Reid.
The overhaul, led by new president Rebecca Kutler, also cancels weekend shows hosted by Ayman Mohyeldin, Jonathan Capehart, Katie Phang, and Jose Diaz-Balart.
Reid, set to host her final show on Monday, expressed her feelings about her ousting during a podcast call-in. Psaki will occupy Rachel Maddow’s time slot when Maddow returns to a once-a-week schedule. The network plans to strengthen its correspondent teams and establish a Washington bureau.
Daytime hosts Katy Tur, Ana Cabrera, and Chris Jansing will see their shows adjusted, while Ali Velshi’s weekend show will expand. Kutler acknowledged the challenges ahead as MSNBC, like CNN, has been losing viewers. Meanwhile, Lester Holt announced he will step down as anchor of “NBC Nightly News” after a decade but will continue with “Dateline.”
