A 22-year-old truck driver from the small village of Kedgwick, New Brunswick, sparked controversy when he told the American Idol host, “I never had to speak in English in life,” before stepping into the audition room. His words left everyone wondering what he would do next. With an acoustic guitar in hand, dressed in a white t-shirt, backwards ball cap, and camouflage pants, he confidently took the stage. The moment he hit the first note of Jelly Roll’s Save Me, he stunned the judges. Carrie Underwood, agreeing with Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, declared, “I think I’m going to roll that dice too. I’m going to say yes.”

“You’ve got a unique style that you can work with,” Richie said.

Language Barrier Causes Issues

“I never had to speak in English in life,” Bergeron told Idol host Ryan Seacrest before stepping into the audition room in front of the star-studded panel of judges, comprised of Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan.

Then, he entered the room with his acoustic guitar in hand, wearing a white t-shirt, backwards ball cap and camouflage pants. Bergeron was greeted by the Idol judges, who asked him to tell them about himself and where he’s from.

He revealed his age, profession and that he was from a small village called Kedgwick, New-Brunswick in Canada.

Luke Bryan “the mussels up there out of the sea are amazing,” Luke Bryan said, acknowledging his home base. Bergeron thought he was talking about his muscles, so Bryan clarified, “no, the mussels, the seafood.”

“Oh, not the muscles,” Bergeron said while laughing, referencing his arms. Carrie Underwood confirmed, “not these,” as she flexed and showed off her very toned biceps.

Auditioned With “Save Me” By Jelly Roll

Olivier Bergeron went on to deliver a stunning cover of “Save Me” by Jelly Roll. “I’m a lost cause/ Baby, don’t waste your time on me/ I’m so damaged beyond repair/ Life has shattered my hopes and my dreams,” the contestant sang on the chorus of the chart-topping track.

“One side of me wants to say, just hold him for a minute. Let him kind of develop, but you’ve got a unique style that you can work with,” Richie said. Luke Bryan chimed in, “you’re acting like you want to roll some dice there, Lionel. I think I’m going to roll the dice too.”

Carrie Underwood agreed with Richie and Bryan, “I think I’m going to roll that dice too. I’m going to say yes.”

Earned A Golden Ticket To Advance To Hollywood

All three of the Idol judges voted ‘yes’ and the Canadian contestant scored a golden ticket to advance to Hollywood week. Bergeron was confused, as he didn’t understand English very well.

Bryan laughed, “I don’t think he knows what the hell we’re saying.”

Full of excitement, Olivier Bergeron then exited the Idol audition room to share the news with his family, who were waiting outside the door. “I’m going to Hollywood!” he said with a big smile on his face.
